Teotitlán del Valle sits at the foot of the Sierra Juárez, about 30 km from Oaxaca City. For centuries its Zapotec families have woven wool rugs (tapetes) on pedal looms.

Colour from nature

The village is famous for natural dyes: deep red from cochineal insects, blue from indigo, yellows from marigold and pomegranate. Watching a demonstration of cochineal turning from grey to crimson is unforgettable.
