The word Guelaguetza comes from Zapotec and means “reciprocal exchange of gifts.” Today it names the festival that brings together delegations from Oaxaca’s eight regions in a dazzling display of dance, music and traditional dress.

The Lunes del Cerro

The main performances, known as the Lunes del Cerro (“Mondays on the Hill”), take place on the two Mondays after July 16 at the Auditorio Guelaguetza on the Cerro del Fortín. Check current dates and official info on Oaxaca’s tourism portal.
