The Oaxaca coast is one of the world’s great sea-turtle nurseries. Several species nest here, and community programs release hatchlings at sunset.
Where it happens
Mazunte is the heart of turtle conservation, home to the Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga (Mexican Turtle Center). Releases also take place on beaches near Puerto Escondido and Huatulco.
Do it ethically
- Join an official or community-run program, never a roadside operator
- Never touch or carry the hatchlings unless instructed
- No flash photography — lights disorient them
