Hierve el Agua — “the water boils” — is one of Oaxaca’s most photographed sights: two cliff-side rock formations that look like cascading waterfalls frozen in time.
How they formed
Spring water over-saturated with calcium carbonate trickles over the cliffs and deposits minerals, building rock “falls” much like cave stalactites. The name refers to the water bubbling up from the springs, not heat. More on the geology and history.
The pools
Natural and artificial pools sit at the cliff edge, offering a famous “infinity” view over the valley — best in the early morning light.
